Disable the Insert key

Some users have complained that they accidentally hit the insert key and end up overwriting test instead of inserting text in a document. To avoid this issue a registry key can be set to disable the Windows 10 insert key. 

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard
  2. Type "Registry Editor"
  3. Press Enter and the Registry Window should open
  4. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout" 
    1. In the left hand pane find the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” folder and expand it
    2. Find the "System" folder and expand it
    3.  Find the "CurrentControlSet" folder and expand it
    4. Find the "Control" folder and expand it
    5. Find the "Keyboard Layout" folder and open it
  5. In the main window pane of Keyboard Layout
    1. Right-click 
    2. Select "New" -> "Binary value"
    3. name = "Insert_Disabled"
    4. In the Value field type the following:
      00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 52 E0 00 00 00 00
    5. Press OK button
  6. Exit the registry editor
  7. Reboot the computer to enable the disabled insert key function.
